Samenvatting
Hoe kijkt Johannes Calvijn naar de kerk? En hoe beïnvloedt Pinksteren zijn visie op de kerk? Calvijn ziet het nieuwe en bijzondere van Pinksteren in de woorden “Ik zal uitgieten” en “over alle mensen” (Hand. 2:17). Deze twee woordgroepen vormen het verdelingsprincipe voor het systematische deel van deze studie. De eerste woordgroep leidt tot een discussie over de Heilige Geest, Hij die de kerk niet alleen door het Woord maar ook door zijn geheime leiding meeneemt. Uit de Geest komen vervolgens alle gaven voort, en bijzondere aandacht wordt geschonken aan de buitengewone gaven en hun gebruik in de kerk van Calvijns dagen. De gaven van de Geest vormen ook de basis voor Calvijns verstaan van de ambten. Dit deel wordt afgesloten met een discussie over de doctrina en het Woord. De tweede woordgroep – “over alle mensen” – leidt onvermijdelijk tot een discussie over de plaats van de heidenen in de kerk. Dit wordt gevolgd door een hoofdstuk over de ecclesiologie, waar aandacht wordt geschonken aan de ecclesiologische aspecten die Calvijn in het boek Handelingen identificeert. De studie wordt afgesloten met een behandeling van de sacramenten, in bijzonder het sacrament van de doop. Dit alles wordt geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van de historische context waarin Calvijn dit werk schreef, en vergeleken met oude en meer eigentijdse commentatoren op het boek Handelingen. De conclusie laat zien hoe Calvijns commentaar op Handelingen zijn ecclesiologie, zoals te vinden in de Institutie, kwalificeert en verrijkt.

| Samenvatting (EN): | How does John Calvin view the church? And how does the pivotal event of Pentecost influence his view on the church? For Calvin the new and peculiar aspect of Pentecost is articulated by the phrases “I will pour out” and “on all flesh” (Acts 2:17), which form the dividing principle for the systematic part of this study. The first of these phrases leads to a discussion of the Holy Spirit, the one who leads the church and the believers, not only through the Word but also through his secret guidance. From the Holy Spirit flow all gifts, and particular attention is given to the extraordinary gifts and Calvin’s view of their use to the church of his own day. The gifts of the Spirit are also the basis for Calvin’s understanding of the ecclesiastical offices. This section is concluded with a discussion of doctrine and the Word. The second phrase, “on all flesh”, almost naturally leads to a discussion of the inclusion of the Gentiles in the church. This is followed by a chapter on ecclesiology proper, where attention is paid to those aspects of the church which Calvin identifies in the book of Acts. The study is concluded with a discussion of the sacraments, in particular the sacrament of baptism. All of this is put against the backdrop of the historical context in which Calvin wrote this particular work, and compared with ancient and more contemporary commentators on the same book. In the conclusion it is shown how Calvin’s commentary on Acts enriches and qualifies his ecclesiology as it is found in his Institutes. |
