Samenvatting

Mijn proefschrift bestudeert Lucas’ weergave van het optreden van Paulus in vijf passages uit Handelingen. Daarin houdt hij bijvoorbeeld een redevoering, geneest iemand, of draait zijn toehoorders demonstratief de rug toe. Zo’n optreden heet in het Engels een performance. In de hedendaagse geestes- en menswetenschappen is veel aandacht voor de manier waarop iemand door zo’n performance een boodschap kan overbrengen: niet alleen met zijn woorden, maar met heel zijn optreden. Ook de plaats is van belang: wanneer Paulus in de rechtbank van de Areopagus spreekt, geeft dat zijn woorden een enorm gewicht, omdat deze rechtbank beroemd was om zijn strengheid en rechtvaardigheid. Een bepaalde wijze van optreden kan lezers van het boek ook herinneren aan andere, iconische personen die op dezelfde manier optraden. Zo’n patroon noem ik een cultureel script. Paulus’ optreden doet bijvoorbeeld denken aan de profeten van het Oude Testament, en ook aan de Griekse filosoof Socrates en de beroemde redenaar Demosthenes. Door Paulus te beschrijven als een krachtig spreker in het spoor van de profeten, die zijn publiek – waaronder hooggeplaatste Joden, Grieken en Romeinen – met zijn optreden weet te boeien, laat Lucas zien dat het onderwijs van Jezus, dat Paulus leert, geen schadelijk bijgeloof is, zoals Romeinen dachten, en zich ook niet keert tegen het Joodse volk en de Joodse wet, zoals sommige Joden dachten. Lucas heeft met zijn portretten van Paulus’ performance Theofilus en andere lezers heeft willen bemoedigen door negatieve beelden over christenen te weerleggen, beelden die circuleerden in hun Romeins-Joodse sociale netwerk. My thesis examines Luke’s portrayal of Paul’s performance in five passages from the book of Acts. In these passages, he gives a speech, heals someone, or turns his back to his audience, for example. In the contemporary humanities and social sciences, much attention is given to the way in which one can deliver a message through such a performance: not just by words, but by the entire performance. The location is relevant as well: when Paul speaks in the court of the Areopagus, this adds great weight to his words, because this court was famous for its severity and justice. A certain manner of performing can remind readers of the book of other, iconic figures who performed in a similar way. Such a pattern is what I call a cultural script. Paul’s performance recalls, for example, the prophets of the Old Testament, and also the Greek philosopher Socrates and the famous orator Demosthenes. By portraying Paul as a commanding speaker and prophetic figure, who captivates his audience – including prominent Jews, Greeks and Romans – by his performance, Luke shows that the teaching of Jesus, which is taught by Paul, is not a pernicious superstition, as Romans thought, and is also not directed against the Jewish people and the Jewish law, as some Jews thought. Through his portraits of Paul’s performance, Luke has sought to reassure Theophilus and other readers by refuting negative views about Christians, views circulating in their Roman-Jewish social network.
