Samenvatting

Recent decades have witnessed an ecclesial turn in public theology. Especially in the work of Stanley Hauerwas the church has become the center of theological reflection. In such proposals, critics worry about the isolation of the church. This study seeks to contribute to the ongoing reflection of the relationship between the church and the world. This is done by providing an historical overview and theological analysis of the thought of the Dutch neo-Calvinist pastor-theologian Klaas Schilder (1890-1952) on this topic. Schilder’s thought develops over time and is intertwined with his cultural and ecclesial context but is nevertheless consistent. Navigating between Abraham Kuyper and Karl Barth, Schilder emphasizes the distinct character of the church, not unlike Hauerwas. The church is for Schilder primarily an objective, visible reality: an institution with a confession where the believers are gathered and as such the church of Christ. As the church of the living Christ the church is also dynamic. The static and the dynamic are a central tension in his ecclesiology. Notwithstanding his strong ecclesial emphasis, Schilder maintains the strong neo-Calvinist creational motif resulting in an unwavering attention for cultural engagement. The church for Schilder is ultimately instrumental in the cultural mandate. Daily work and daily life are the heart of the Christian life. The church is the means, the world is the end. De afgelopen decennia heeft zich in de publieke theologie een wending naar de kerk afgetekend. Met name in het oeuvre van Stanley Hauerwas staat de kerk in het middelpunt van de theologie. Critici vragen zich af of deze wending niet tot gevolg heeft dat de kerk in een isolement raakt. Dit onderzoek wil bijdragen aan deze doorgaande bezinning op de relatie tussen kerk en wereld door een historische weergave en analyse van het denken van de Nederlandse neocalvinistische theoloog Klaas Schilder (1890-1952) op dit punt. Schilders denken is verweven met zijn kerkelijke en culturele context en ontwikkelt zich, maar is overwegend consistent. Navigerend tussen Abraham Kuyper en Karl Barth, benadrukt Schilder de eigen, onderscheiden aard van de kerk, parallel aan Hauerwas. Voor Schilder is de kerk primair een objectieve, zichtbare werkelijkheid: een instituut met een belijdenis waar de gelovigen samenkomen. Alleen zo is de kerk kerk van Christus. Als de kerk van de levende Christus, is zij ook dynamisch. Dit dynamische in Schilders denken over de kerk staat met het statische op gespannen voet. Ondanks zijn sterke nadruk op de kerk, blijft voor Schilder de betrokkenheid op de wereld primair. Dit is zo dankzij het neocalvinistische scheppingsmotief dat ook zijn denken beheerst. De kerk is zo bij Schilder uiteindelijk een instrument voor de cultuuropdracht van de mens. Het dagelijks werk en leven vormen het hart van het leven van de christen. De kerk is het middel, de wereld is het doel.
